Minister's daft suggestion regarding low speed road traffic accident claims.

Among the general nonsense and misinformation regarding personal injury lawyers, being put about by road safety minister, Mike Penning, is his suggestion that he would like to introduce a minimum speed, under which "whiplash" claims cannot be made.
As well being a daft idea from a purely practical point of view - in most cases it will be impossible to prove the exact speed of the vehicle(s) prior to impact - it is also very unjust.
We have just settled a claim for £150,000 for a client whose life has been turned totally upside down by what both parties accept was just such a "low velocity impact".
At least the Law Society are on the ball. Chief Executive, Desmond Hudson, referred to Mr Penning's remarks as "irresponsible". He said it was the "backbone of the British legal system" that those harmed by others negligence should be entitled to compensation. He has offered to meet with the minister to offer a "clearer picture" of solicitors' work.
As a former journalist, perhaps Mr Penning should realise that he should not believe everything that he reads in the press!
